A honky tonk is a bar that features live music — typically country, but Nashville's honky tonks now span genres from rock to pop to blues. The term originated in the 1890s and became synonymous with Nashville's Lower Broadway strip. Most honky tonks offer free entry (no cover charge during the day), with music starting as early as 10 AM and running until 3 AM. Tipping musicians is expected and appreciated — they're playing for tips, not a salary.
The most famous honky tonk in the world. Since 1960, legends performed here. Three floors, rooftop. Small evening cover on weekends.
Last true honky tonk. No cover, cold beer, traditional country. The Recession Special is an institution.
Three floors, high-energy cover bands. Great rooftop patio. Popular with younger crowds.
Jason Aldean's Kitchen + Rooftop (four stories, massive rooftop). Kid Rock's Big Ass Honky Tonk (love it or hate it, it's huge). Ole Red (Blake Shelton, excellent live music curation). Luke Bryan's 32 Bridge (high-energy, country-pop). FGL House (Florida Georgia Line, party atmosphere).
Start at the river end (1st Ave) and work your way up. Afternoon bands (1-5 PM) are often the best musicians. Tip $5-20 per song request (they'll play your request for a good tip). Cash is preferred for tips. Wear comfortable shoes. Hydrate between drinks. Most bars serve food — quality varies widely.
